“I remember I picked up my dog and rolled over my girlfriend and got shot in my leg and it shattered my femur,” he said.

Kylee Au Young, 21, and Cristobal Omar Perez, 31, were arrested by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Thursday in connection with the shooting of an encampment on December 1, 2023. The duo were scheduled to appear in court Friday, but only one arrived.

The owner at the am/pm at Charleston Boulevard and North Honolulu Street said he tries to help those from the encampment that frequent his store. Adolph said that if anyone can help him pay for medication for his dog, a portable charger for his phone, clothes, and food would go a long way.

“It’s been really hard,” Adolph said. “It can’t go back to normal because this is something that changes people’s lives forever.”

Reno arsonist seen fleeing deadly fire with gas can sentenced to life without parole https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/reno-arsonist-seen-fleeing-deadly-fire-with-gas-can-sentenced-to-life-without-parole/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 23:59:28 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712358 RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada man who was spotted running from a burning Reno apartment building with a gas can in his hand has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to two murder charges in the 2020 fire.

Two women died and 13 people were injured, some while jumping from second-floor windows to escape the pre-dawn flames that destroyed the eight-unit apartment complex southeast of downtown on July 20, 2020.

Brian Bandy, 35, of Sun Valley pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon in the deaths of Katherine White, 70, and Diana Engstrom, 51. They died of smoke inhalation inside their apartments.

Washoe District Judge Kathleen Sigurdson sentenced Bandy on Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A man who saw Bandy running with the gas can and jump into a car called 911 then followed him until police were able to initiate a traffic stop and take him into custody, prosecutors said. Police said an investigation revealed Bandy owed money to someone living in the apartment complex and had argued with that person in the weeks before the fire.

Investigators said Bandy poured gasoline on wooden steps outside one of the apartments and lit it on fire. By the time firefighters arrived about 5:30 a.m., the building was already engulfed in flames and thick black smoke.

Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks said the eight families who lived at the complex on Broadway Boulevard lost their life's possessions. He praised the witness who called police and followed Bandy as he fled.

“His selfless acts are highly commendable and helped bring this defendant to justice,” Hicks said in a statement Friday.

Las Vegas police: 2 arrested, 1 wanted in deadly homeless encampment shooting https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/las-vegas-police-to-provide-update-1-month-after-deadly-homeless-encampment-shooting/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 04:54:05 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711319 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - Two people have been arrested, and another suspect remains outstanding, after a deadly shooting at a Las Vegas homeless encampment.

It took place on Dec. 1, 2023, at East Charleston Boulevard and North Honolulu Street near U.S. 95 at an encampment where five unhoused people were living.

Police allege that Cristobal Omar Perez, 31, was the suspected gunman, and his girlfriend Kylee Au Young, 21, was another suspect in the shooting.

Two people were killed in the shooting and were identified by police as Timothy Brenton and Ashley Burrell. Three other unhoused people were also injured during the shooting.

Police told 8 News Now they believed the suspects had planned the shooting.

"What we know now is this was clearly a targeted planned attack on these specific unhoused individuals that were living there in that encampment," Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Jason Johansson said at a news conference on Thursday night.

Before the shooting, Perez was allegedly dropped off in a neighborhood north of where the shooting occurred, according to police. He later waited for a black SUV to pick him up along Sandhill Road near Charleston. Once the SUV parked on Sandhill Road, Perez is accused of walking toward the homeless encampment where he immediately started shooting, police said.

East Las Vegas valley shooting leaves 1 dead and 4 injured near Charleston Boulevard and U.S. 95. on Dec. 1, 2023. (KLAS)

After the shooting, Perez left the area and met up with Au Young who was waiting in another getaway vehicle for him. They were then dropped off and the two drove home to their residences in the northwest Las Vegas valley, police said.

Metro detectives continue to look for another suspect in the case and are working to identify that person, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Jason Johansson.

On Thursday night, police said they were still investigating a motive in the shooting.

"All signs indicate that there was some sort of dispute between a relative of Cristobal who lives in the area to the north of where this shooting took place and then as a result of this dispute this shooting occurred," Johansson said.

Both Perez and Au Young face murder and battery with a deadly weapon charges, according to Las Vegas Metro police.

Raul Gil, 63, who told bookkeepers at Casa Don Juan restaurants to create false sales numbers that resulted in underreporting sales by $5.1 million from 2014 through 2018, was sentenced to 37 months in prison and three years of supervised release.

The IRS was cheated out of $1.6 million in taxes, according to a news release from the office of Jason M. Frierson, U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada.

U.S. District Judge Andrew P. Gordon ordered Gil to pay $2,228,943.65 in restitution.

After the sales records were falsified, Gil sent them to an outside tax return preparer who prepared his federal income tax returns.

Gil pleaded guilty to tax evasion in August of 2022. At the time, he faced a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

During interviews with the IRS, Gil falsely stated that the daily cash reports and point-of-sale records were accurate. He repeated the lie to IRS-Criminal Investigation special agents, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg of the Justice Department’s Tax Division, United States Attorney Jason M. Frierson for the District of Nevada, and IRS Criminal Investigations Phoenix Field Office Acting Special Agent in Charge Carissa Messick made the announcement.

The case was investigated by the IRS criminal investigations unit. Trial Attorney Thomas Flynn of the Tax Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Tony Lopez of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada prosecuted the case.

Las Vegas judge returns to work 1 day after courtroom attack https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/clark-county-chief-judge-provides-update-on-those-injured-during-las-vegas-courtroom-attack/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 00:45:42 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710998 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - A Clark County District Court judge returned to work Thursday one day after a man attacked her in a video gone viral..

Judge Mary Kay Holthus was injured, received medical attention, and was released from medical assistance Wednesday afternoon, Chief Judge Jerry Wiese said Thursday. Wiese said Holthus remained sore and stiff.

Wiese briefed reporters Thursday afternoon about the attack that occurred at the Regional Justice Center on Jan. 3. He also spoke about the importance of added security in the courtroom.

As the 8 News Now Investigators first reported, Deobra Redden, 30, a three-time felon, was in Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus’ courtroom for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. As Holthus was getting ready to sentence Redden to prison time, he lunged over the bench and attacked her.

Shane Brandon, a court marshal who was in the courtroom on Wednesday, was taken to the hospital and treated for a head injury and released. His injuries were still being treated on Thursday. A law clerk, identified as Michael Lasso, also received medical attention due to hand abrasions and was released by medical staff.

"We commend the heroic acts of Judge Holthus' staff, law enforcement, and all others who subdued the defendant," Wiese said. The chief judge said Holthus thanked all the well-wishers and others who expressed concern for her and her staff.

"She is extremely grateful for those who took brave actions during the attack," Wiese added. "I want to make sure that the public is aware that the courthouse is a safe place to be, this was a very unique situation, and we are doing what we can to maintain the integrity of the court and the safety that we have here."

Several reporters asked Wiese what additional safety measures would be taken in the days following the courtroom attack. Crisis services have been arranged for those in need of assistance. Additional security personnel have been brought in to support courtroom coverage.

"We have notified Clark County management that there is a need for additional marshal positions in our high-risk calendars," Wiese added. "There's always a shortage of marshals, we think there could always be an increased security presence that would be better for the courthouse."

On Thursday, Redden refused to show up for his initial appearance in the same building where the attack happened the day before.

The Clark County District Attorney’s office requested Redden be held without bail. However, Pro-Tem Judge Lauren Diefenbach said she was uncomfortable arguing about bail without Redden present. Bail remained at $54,000.

Redden faces the following charges after the Jan. 3 courtroom attack.

  • Coercion w/force or threat of force
  • Extortion
  • Intimidate public officers/others, with the use of force
  • Disregard safety of person/property
  • Battery by prisoner, probationer, or parolee
  • Unlaw act excrete/fluid by prisoner in confined area
  • Battery on a protected person

He was due in court again on Jan. 8 and also on Jan. 9.

North Las Vegas woman allegedly shot at neighbors, killing pastor, after they reported her to HOA https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/north-las-vegas-woman-shoots-at-neighbors-killing-pastor-after-they-reported-her-to-hoa/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 04:27:53 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710007 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A North Las Vegas woman faces murder and attempted murder charges after she allegedly shot at her neighbors, killing a pastor and injuring another person after they reported her to the homeowner's association, according to an arrest report.

Joe Junio, 36, faces charges of open murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder with a deadly weapon, two charges of child abuse and/or neglect involving a deadly weapon, and discharging of a firearm where a person might be endangered.

Photo of Joe Junio provided by North Las Vegas police

On Dec. 29 around 4:20 p.m., North Las Vegas police responded to the 6600 block of Lookout Lodge Lane near Decatur Boulevard and Centennial Parkway after a report of a shooting. Dispatch told police that the daughter of the victim said her father was shot by their neighbor.

When officers arrived they found two victims, one was shot in the abdomen and the other in the thigh.

The victim shot in the abdomen, identified as Nick Davi, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Davi was a pastor at Grace Point Church in North Las Vegas. A letter sent to the congregation of Grace Point Church asked the community to “Lift up the Davi family in prayer as they navigate the tragic loss."

The victims' 15-year-old and 12-year-old children were also at the scene and recorded the shooting on their phone, according to the report.

Police said that when they arrived at the scene, they were told that the suspect had run to her apartment. When officers got to the apartment, they found Junio standing in the doorway and took her into custody.

Junio and Davi's family were neighbors and in the weeks before the shooting, Junio exhibited "escalating threatening behavior" after the family reported her to the HOA for violations related to chickens and dogs, the report said.

In response, Junio started harassing and threatening the family, resulting in them calling the police on her twice in the month prior to the shooting, according to the report.

The harassment and threats included throwing rocks into their backyard while the children were outside, running her finger across her throat and telling them, "they were next," throwing dog feces into their backyard and flooding their unit through a wall they shared with Junio, police said.

The family applied for a temporary protection order against Junio. The court hearing for that order was scheduled for Jan. 8.

The family said they no longer felt safe staying in the home, so they started to stay the night at a friend's house for two weeks.

On the day of the shooting, the family was getting into their car to leave for the evening when they saw Junio drive past and look at them. Junio then parked next the them and rolled down her window. At that point, one of the victims' children started recording on her phone, the report said.

One of the victims asked Junio, "Why don't you leave us alone? We've had enough." Junio continued to stare at the family and the victim then asked "What's your problem with us?" and took a couple of steps toward the car.

Junio then got out of the car and started to shoot toward the family, hitting Davi and another woman. One of the victims fought over the gun with Junio before she ran away to her apartment, police said.

Junio was booked into the North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center on related charges.

Naked man who stole Las Vegas police vehicle, caused wreck could spend 2 years in prison https://www.8newsnow.com/crime/naked-man-who-stole-las-vegas-police-vehicle-caused-wreck-could-spend-2-years-in-prison/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 03:21:12 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710016 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The man who stole a Las Vegas police vehicle while naked and then crashed it, injuring two people, pleaded guilty Wednesday and could serve two to 20 years in prison.

Clyde Cabulisan, 29, pleaded to charges of DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm and stop required on a signal of a police officer resulting in bodily harm, records said. He originally faced 10 charges.

As part of a plea deal, a judge could sentence Cabulisan to 2-20 years in prison, documents said. Prosecutors will not make a recommendation at Cabulisan’s sentencing.

Police arrested Cabulisan after a wild Halloween night where he was captured on video naked and physically fighting with a police officer near Buffalo Drive and Blue Diamond Road.

Cabulisan then stole the officer’s patrol vehicle and led police on a chase that ended with a crash into another vehicle.

In November, Ricoh Abrera, the passenger in the vehicle Cabulisan struck, told 8 News Now that he was left with a fractured neck, difficulty breathing, lots of bruising, and was unable to move the right side of his body.

Clyde Cabulisan appears in court on several charges including DUI on Nov. 7, 2023. (KLAS)

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson told 8 News Now shortly after Cabulisan’s arrest that the man was either under the influence of alcohol or drugs and attempted to run from the crash scene. Wolfson said Abrera and the other victim suffered life-long injuries.

A judge has the final say in the sentence. Judges often sentence defendants to anywhere from 2-6 years in similar cases. Sentencing was scheduled for February.

Once out of prison, Cabulisan must have a breath ignition interlock device put on any car he owns or operates for up to three years. If he violates probation upon relation, Cabulisan could face further prison time.

Woman fears for life during terrifying Las Vegas home invasion https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/woman-fears-for-life-during-terrifying-las-vegas-home-invasion/ Wed, 03 Jan 2024 19:48:39 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1709367 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A Las Vegas woman is facing several felony charges after she allegedly broke into an apartment, dragged a woman around by her hair, and held a hammer to her head causing the woman to fear for her life.

Yesenia Centeno, 29, was arrested on Dec. 22, one week after the alleged incident occurred, and is charged with home invasion with the use of a deadly weapon, burglary while possessing a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, and robbery with the use of a deadly weapon.

According to Centeno's arrest report, police were dispatched on a late-night assault and battery call on Dec. 15 when a woman reported Centeno broke a window, entered her apartment, and stood over her while she was in bed and demanded the victim's roommate return her stolen cellphone. The victim told police she had briefly met Centeno through a friend a few weeks earlier and wasn't aware of any stolen cellphone.

The victim told police Centeno grabbed her by her hair and held a hammer to her head as she dragged her around the apartment looking for the phone. At one point Centeno held her down and she "felt that she was going to be killed once she saw Centeno take a deep breath and raise the hammer," according to the police documents.

Centeno did release the woman but allegedly took an $800 projector before she fled the apartment.

During the investigation, police learned there were incidents in the preceding weeks of Centeno showing up at the victim's apartment yelling, banging on the apartment door, and breaking windows. During one of those incidents, Centeno stole the victim's cellphone when she attempted to call police, the report stated.

Man accused of stealing airplane from North Las Vegas Airport, flying it to California https://www.8newsnow.com/crime/man-accused-of-stealing-airplane-from-north-las-vegas-airport-flying-it-to-california/ Wed, 03 Jan 2024 00:12:07 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1708659 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A man faces multiple charges after he allegedly stole an airplane from the North Las Vegas Airport and flew it to California, according to North Las Vegas police.

On Dec. 30 around 2 p.m., police said a 2020 Kitfox fixed wing single-engine type aircraft was stolen from the North Las Vegas Airport.

The owner of the aircraft was contacted by Air Force Search and Rescue when his aircraft's emergency location transmitter activated.

Police said that the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Damian Zukaitis, stole the plane and flew to an area near the Barstow-Daggett Airport.

The SBCSO received a call from the FAA around 6:48 p.m. that the aircraft landed near the airport.

Zukaitis landed on a roadway outside of the airport, where he was contacted by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office. Police said at the time, SBCSO did not know that Zukaitis had stolen the airplane.

At some point during the interaction with the SBCSO, Zukaitis fled into a desert area. SBCSO eventually caught and arrested Zukaitis.

Zukaitis was booked into the BCSO - Barstow Station on charges of possession of a stolen airplane and transporting stolen property across state lines. Additional charges related to the crimes in Nevada are pending.

Police said that on Dec. 27, 28, and 29, there were reports of airplanes that had attempted to be broken into at the NLV airport. Investigators believe that Zukaitis was responsible for those incidents as well, according to North Las Vegas police.

North Las Vegas police said the motive is still under investigation.

The North Las Vegas Airport released the following statement:

"The safety and security of our tenants, pilots and passengers is always a top priority and we consistently review procedures and practices.  We work very closely with the North Las Vegas Police Department who provide law enforcement assistance and have a contracted security company to patrol after hours."

Former NBA G League player accused in Las Vegas murder plot appears in court https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/former-nba-g-league-player-accused-in-las-vegas-murder-plot-appears-in-court/ Tue, 02 Jan 2024 20:25:56 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1708411 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A former NBA G-league player appeared in a Las Vegas courtroom Tuesday morning after being extradited from California. Chance Comanche, 27, who most recently played for the Stockton Kings, faces murder and kidnapping charges. He waived his right to a preliminary hearing within 15 days.

Comanche is accused of killing Marayna Rodgers, 23, on Dec. 6. He and his co-defendant, Sakari Harnden, 19, plotted the kidnapping and murder of Rodgers, according to Las Vegas Metro police.

Marayna Rodgers, 23, was last seen on Dec. 6, according to loved ones. (KLAS)

Harnden and Rodgers were both sex workers, according to an arrest report. Rodgers had thought she and Harnden were going on a “double date” to sell sex, but instead, Comanche had pretended to be a client, police said.

Police said that they uncovered messages dating back to Dec. 1 on the communication application Telegram between Comanche and Harnden planning the kidnapping and murder of Rodgers.

Photo of Chance Comanche (left) provided by Associated Press. Photo of Sakari Harnden (right) provided by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

In earlier messages, it appeared Comanche referred to other individuals who appeared to know about the plan.

"It's green," Comanche messaged on the morning of Dec. 1, according to the report. "Gave them her full name. SSN. Her IG page. All dat."

On Dec. 2, police said Comanche messaged, "I told my dawg the whole plan. He just waiting to run it by them."

Later that day, a third unidentified person was added to the chat, according to the report.

"It's time," police said Comanche messaged later that night. "Run the plan by him so he can relay it. Folks ready."

"Trynna find a (ghost emoji gun emoji)," the third person in the report messaged on Dec. 3. Ghost guns are typically assembled by the buyer and untraceable.

On Dec. 4, police said Comanche messaged, "Get that <expletive> drunk and mix rat poison or sum in her drink."

He later messaged, "I can snap her neck or just strangle the <expletive>," the report stated. "If you get a nice little thick piece of rope or sum sturdy I can do it from the back seat. Like how killers do it in the movies."

On the night of Dec. 5, Comanche messaged Rodgers posing as an individual interested in purchasing sexual acts, also known as a trick.

This is the same night Comanche's team played at The Dollar Loan Center in Henderson.

A friend told police that Rodgers showed him a string of text messages between her and Harnden where Harnden had prearranged a prostitution double date, according to the report.

The report stated, "In the text messages, the unknown trick offered to pay Marayna $1,000 for services."

The friend said that he had dropped off Rodgers to meet Harnden and found it odd that a man, whom police later identified as Comanche, was in the back seat.

In the early morning hours, while the pair was with Rodgers, police said Comanche messaged, "My acting skills are beyond superb."

Detectives said Comanche appeared to coach Harnden about being questioned by police.

"It's Vegas, she <expletive> around and got kidnapped. She was with you til such and such time then the guy she was supposed to go meet with called her an Uber and she left," Comanche messaged, according to the report.

The case initially was a missing persons investigation with the LVMPD's Vice section involved after friends told police Rodgers was a sex worker, according to the report. When detectives discovered the Telegram messages, the case was turned over to LVMPD's Homicide section.

Harnden was taken into custody in Las Vegas on Dec. 13. Police said she claimed Rodgers was getting into an Uber the last time she saw her. Through an emergency Uber request, police learned there were no rides matching Harnden's claim, the report stated.

Comanche was taken into custody in Sacramento County later that week and then confessed. He said Harnden, a former girlfriend he stayed in touch with, described having issues with Rodgers, prompting the pair to put together a plan to lure her away from her friends to kill her, police said.

Comanche told police he offered a friend $3,000 to commit the murder, but the friend was not interested in helping, the report stated.

Comanche also described how the alleged murder was committed when they were parked in a cul-de-sac near Horizon Ridge Parkway and Gibson Road in Henderson. Comanche said he was strangling Rodgers with a cord while Harnden joined in and began choking her with her hands, according to the report.

Police said Comanche told them where to locate the remains of Rodgers.

Detectives identified a possible motive. Harden allegedly implicated a man identified as her boyfriend in a double murder in California, according to an arrest report. The boyfriend was in custody for the murder in San Joaquin County jail, police said.

"Sakari was upset at Marayna for telling other people that Sakari had implicated her boyfriend in the murder," the arrest report stated.

On Dec. 15, Comanche's team announced he was released.

Harnden also faces an unrelated theft charge after police said she stole a Rolex.

Comanche and Harnden are both scheduled to appear back in court on Feb. 8. Both are being held in the Clark County Detention Center without bail. They both declined the 8 News Now Investigators’ requests for an interview.

Comanche’s attorney, Gary Guymon indicated that he would like to reserve to the right to argue for bail.

Harnden appeared to be represented by a Clark County public defender.

Justin Davidson's extensive criminal history a prelude to Wednesday shootings, carjackings in Las Vegas https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/justin-davidsons-extensive-criminal-history-a-prelude-to-wednesday-shootings/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 02:59:47 +0000 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The convicted criminal who went on a shooting and carjacking spree that left three people – including himself – shot to death, has an extensive criminal past that began at an early age, the 8 News Now Investigators have learned.

Justin Jeffrey Davidson, 36, engaged police in two shootouts with two assault rifles Wednesday. Two Metro police officers and three state troopers shot at Davidson 63 times and found his body inside one of the two cars he stole during the mayhem.

Davidson has a string of drug arrests in Las Vegas dating back to March and September, 2011, and at least one conviction in Las Vegas' Eighth Judicial District Court, records show. He also has a drug arrest in Henderson in 2010 and a gun charge there in 2012.

In his most serious offense prior to Wednesday, Davidson pleaded guilty in June 2007 to possession of a controlled substance. He served a portion of 12-to-32-month state prison sentence for that low-level felony, according to records from his court proceedings and the Nevada Department of Corrections.

The police report detailing the Oct. 2006 arrest indicated police caught Davidson with money in three separate pants pockets, totaling $772, but told police he did not know how much money he had on his person. Additionally, police noticed a gun holster on Davidson's right hip. Police eventually confiscated a loaded Glock .45 caliber handgun underneath Davidson's driver's seat and an additional magazine containing 13 more rounds of ammunition.

The 8 News Now Investigators also confirmed that Davidson has a history of crime as a juvenile offender, and was arrested for the first time at age 15.

Also, as the 8 News Now Investigators were first to report, Davidson owns a house in Henderson with members of his family. That house, in the Green Valley Ranch area, was the subject of a major Metro police search Wednesday night, as was a house in the south valley not far from the wash where police say Davidson shot at his parents, killing his mother, and engaging police in a shootout. Police were at that home all day and night Wednesday and during the day on Thursday.

Crime scene analysts could be seen scouring the wash for evidence Thursday, combing the brush and debris inside it by hand and with a metal detector. Those analysts were wearing bright orange gloves. Similarly, a pair of bright orange gloves contained inside the large plastic trash receptacle outside of Davidson's Henderson home Thursday.

Man who killed mother, bystander during Las Vegas carjacking rampage may have prepared for conflict with police https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/police-to-reveal-details-in-shooting-of-carjacking-suspect-after-deadly-las-vegas-valley-chase/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 21:22:19 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1706483 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Las Vegas Metro police released more details Friday about an early morning rampage by a man who killed his mother, stole a police vehicle and carjacked drivers at gunpoint on Wednesday.

The initial call, suspect's mother is killed

Police detailed the deadly rampage during a news conference, starting with initial calls to dispatchers around 3:46 a.m., alerting authorities that Justin Davidson, 36, of Henderson, was firing a gun near his family home at Placid Street and Maulding Avenue in southeast Las Vegas. The shots awakened Davidson's parents, who police said believed he was firing in the desert wash behind the home.

The parents drove to the wash and got out of their vehicle before Davidson began firing at his parents, killing his mother, identified by the Clark County Coroner's office as Liza Leveille-Davidson, 58, of Las Vegas. Davidson's father ran to the vehicle while Davidson continued firing at him.

Stolen police cruiser

Officers arrived at the scene while Davidson's father retreated before police said Davidson started firing at the officers. The officers took cover behind their vehicles as Davidson continued firing at least two dozen shots at them. Police said Davidson approached a locked Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department cruiser, shot out the window, got inside, and took off.

Davidson drove away in the stolen police vehicle with LVMPD officers chasing him. The chase reached 104 miles per hour, police said, and officers lost sight of Davidson in the cruiser.

The first carjacking

Davidson stopped at a gas station at the 7300 block of South Durango, approached a truck, and carjacked it and the four people who inhabited the vehicle at gunpoint. Surveillance video showed Davidson jumping into the vehicle and slamming into the concrete barrier before speeding away. No one was injured in this carjacking.

The second carjacking

At another gas station at the 8500 block of Blue Diamond, Davidson abandoned the truck and carjacked an SUV occupied by two people. An officer saw the carjacking in progress and fired at Davidson. Investigators believed that one or more of those shots struck Davidson, as they found blood in the SUV when police recovered it.

The third, fatal carjacking

At that point, Davidson continued to Durango Drive and Mistral Avenue. He made a U-turn beside a white van driven by Gerardo Lopez-Martinez, 39, of Las Vegas, who was attempting to pull over. Davidson fired a shot into the driver's side window of the van, striking Lopez-Martinez. Davidson ran to the passenger's side, shot at the door, and entered the van. Davidson pushed Lopez-Martinez out of the driver's side door, sending him to the ground. Officers who arrived on the scene fired 53 shots at Davidson. The vehicle took off, running over Lopez-Martinez in the process.

Davidson's carjacked vehicle broke down at Durango Drive and Agate Avenue, where officers noted there was no motion in the van. SWAT team members arrived before they determined that Davidson was dead. Investigators said there was no indication that Davidson shot himself, as he had abandoned his firearms in the previous vehicle.

Police officers shot a total of 63 shots during the rampage, officials said.

Who is Justin Davidson?

Davidson, police said, had an extensive criminal history dating back to 2009, most recently arrested in Nov. 2023 on a DUI warrant from March. Davidson did have numerous previous arrests on drug and weapon charges.

The guns Davidson used during the rampage were a Sig Sauer AR 308 rifle that had been stolen in May from a Las Vegas gun show and an AK-47-style rifle with the serial number destroyed.

Preparing for confrontation?

Police who were searching the desert wash near Davidson's home, where the rampage began, found loaded ammo magazines of various calibers. Investigators found a notebook that contained writing that included a diagram of a potential ambush, indicating that Davidson had been preparing for a confrontation with officers.

In addition, police found electronic devices, trail cameras, bulletproof vests, tactical helmets, firearms, and components that police believed could be used to create firearm suppressors at Davidson's home in Las Vegas. At his Henderson home, law enforcement found more notebooks and electronics. Investigators noted that they also found military manuals and documents detailing police response to mass-casualty events.

Police said other items included prepping supplies, propane, and an ample butane supply. However, investigators stopped short of saying Davidson was attempting to build an improvised explosive device, saying that those questions remain unanswered as of Friday, as does the question of why Davidson started shooting in the first place.

Las Vegas man charged in sex crime named suspect in shooting that damaged homes, car https://www.8newsnow.com/crime/las-vegas-man-charged-in-sex-crime-named-suspect-in-shooting-that-damaged-homes-car/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 05:05:26 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1706022 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A 19-year-old charged in a sex assault case is also suspected of firing nearly three dozen gunshots in a neighborhood, hitting several homes and a car, documents said.

Metro police arrested Matthew Rubio, 19, on Thursday, Dec. 21, in a parking lot near South Rainbow Boulevard and the 215 Beltway, documents said.

On Dec. 9 around 3 a.m., officers responded to reports of dozens of gunshots fired at a home in the far northeast valley near Hollywood Boulevard and Carey Avenue. Officers found 33 shell casings, adding several other residences and a car were hit with bullets.

Video surveillance from the area showed a man, later identified as Rubio, with a large facial tattoo and gun in his hand, police said. The video shows the man trying to kick open a door, getting into a car, getting out moments later and firing the weapon, officers said.

Metro police arrested Matthew Rubio, 19, on Thursday, Dec. 21, in a parking lot near South Rainbow Boulevard and the 215 Beltway, documents said. (LVMPD/KLAS)

While investigating Rubio’s alleged involvement in the Dec. 9 shooting, they learned of his reported involvement in another investigation.

In September, a person called Metro police reporting a teenager ran away from home and may be in Las Vegas with Rubio, documents said. The teenager’s age was redacted in court documents, though the charge Rubio faces indicates she was between 14 and 16 at the time of the alleged crimes.

Police were able to contact the teenager and review her phone. During a search, police said they found videos and photos of Rubio and the teenager having sex.

“Amongst the photos and videos located… [detectives] also observed [Rubio] holding multiple firearms near [the teenager] or of her holding firearms,” police said. “Evidence of [the teenager] being with [Rubio] on the days she was reported as a missing juvenile before police located her were also found in the text messages.”

During Rubio’s arrest, police said he had a gun matching the one in the surveillance video from the shooting.

Rubio faces ten felony charges, including attempted home invasion, sexual assault against a child under 16 and child abuse or neglect, records said.

During his initial court appearance on Dec. 22, Judge Daniel Westmeyer set a combined bail amount of $150,000, records said, however, jail records indicated Rubio was being held with no bail as of Thursday.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Feb. 6.

Police search 2 new locations following Las Vegas carjacking turned police shooting that left suspect, 2 others dead https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/police-search-2-new-locations-following-las-vegas-carjacking-turned-police-shooting-that-left-suspect-2-others-dead/ Thu, 28 Dec 2023 06:49:18 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1705348 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Police combed through two new crime scenes Wednesday after a gunman went on a carjacking and shooting rampage all through the south Las Vegas valley, the 8 News Now Investigators have learned.

The first incident occurred at a home near a wash where a gunman in his 30s, police say, opened fire on his parents early Wednesday morning and killed his mother, who was in her 50s.

Police eventually caught up with the suspect who, they say, disobeyed their orders and shot several times at police, before police opened fire on him and killed him.

One other man, the driver of a white van the gunman hijacked, was also shot and killed Wednesday.

While 8 News Now is waiting for an official confirmation from the Clark County Coroner's office, posts on social media and a GoFundMe say the victim in the van was Jerry Lopez.

According to friends and family, Lopez was getting gas on his way to work when he was carjacked. He left behind his wife and their seven children, six of whom they first fostered and then adopted.

"This was not a random act, what happened here," Metro homicide Lt. Jason Johansson said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon. "There is a direct family connection to that."

The 8 News Now Investigators traced that connection to a home in Henderson near Discovery Park in the Green Valley Ranch area. The same entity – a family trust – owns both the Las Vegas home near the wash and the Henderson home. Metro cordoned off both homes with crime scene tape. The 8 News Now Investigators witnessed Metro K9 units at the scene of the Henderson home.

Additionally, the 8 News Now Investigators obtained a photo of police detaining two men In front of the Henderson home. According to a neighbor, police ordered the occupants of that home – some by name – to exit, at which point they detained some of those occupants.

Metro police arrested two people at a Henderson home on Dec. 27 following a carjacking turned police shooting that left the suspect and two others dead. (KLAS)

Those two new crime scenes are part of a much larger, sprawling scene that covered a large stretch of South Durango Drive and ultimately included another location on the other side of I-15 where the suspect, now deceased, stole a police cruiser.

A Nevada State Police Highway Patrol trooper arrested Alan Lopez around 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23, documents said. The trooper clocked Lopez driving 86 mph in a 65-mph zone on U.S. 95 in the east valley.

Lopez, who does not have a driver’s license, provided the trooper with a Mexico Consular ID, police said. The trooper then noticed the smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from the car.

The trooper later found an open glass bottle of beer in the passenger seat “stuffed next to the seat belt lock,” documents said.

During a field sobriety test, Lopez “could not balance” and “had to be told multiple times” to stand, police said.

Lopez was convicted of DUI in 2020 and 2021, police said.

Lopez faces charges of DUI, speeding, driving without a license and driving with an open container of alcohol, records showed. A judge released him from custody Tuesday as prosecutors had yet to file a criminal complaint in the case.

After his second DUI conviction, a Las Vegas Justice Court judge ordered Lopez to attend DUI school, perform 100 hours of community service and have a breath interlock device installed on his car, records said. It was unclear how long the device was required to stay in the vehicle.

A booking photo for Lopez was not immediately available.

Murder victim with possible Las Vegas ties identified nearly 50 years later https://www.8newsnow.com/crime/murder-victim-with-possible-las-vegas-ties-identified-nearly-50-years-later/ Tue, 26 Dec 2023 23:03:15 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1704267 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Nearly 50 years after hikers found his body in a shallow grave, a homicide victim has a name and he may have ties to Las Vegas, deputies said Tuesday.

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office identified the remains of a man discovered on Nov. 23, 1976, as that of Luis Alonso Paredes. Deputies said Paredes was originally from El Salvador and may have been working and living in the Las Vegas area.

Hikers found Paredes’ body about six miles east of Katherine Landing, which is on the eastern side of Lake Mohave north of Laughlin, Nevada. He was shot in the head “at close range,” deputies said.

Deputies attempted to identify the body in the 1970s from fingerprints, they said. It was not until October when investigators compared the fingerprints to those in national databases unavailable at the time, they said.

The Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff helped deputies sketch an image of the unidentified body at the time.

Paredes may have worked in the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy in the San Francisco Area in the years before his death, deputies said, adding they have been unable to find relatives.

'Nobody saw anything!' Las Vegas man charged with murder after video shows him stabbing victim: police https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/nobody-saw-anything-las-vegas-man-charged-with-murder-after-video-shows-him-stabbing-victim-police/ Tue, 26 Dec 2023 21:36:24 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1704121 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A man faces a murder charge after he allegedly stabbed and killed another man after the victim cut his finger, saying, "You stab me, it's okay for me to stab you," Las Vegas Metro police said.

On Dec. 18 at around 2:40 p.m., Metro police officers responded to a business after reports that a man was stabbed near Foremaster Lane and North Main Street.

Arriving officers found a man on the sidewalk suffering from a stab wound on his torso, an arrest report stated. Medical personnel attempted life-saving measures and took the victim, later identified as Dimetrius Sims, to a local hospital.

Hospital personnel later pronounced Sims dead.

Witnesses at the scene told police that the suspect walked away from the crime scene and described him, according to the report. Officers found Keith Holland, 37, and took him into custody.

Keith Holland, 37 (LVMPD)

Holland told police he was on Main Street and Sims across the street as the two yelled at each other and "[used] profanity," police documents said. Holland said he was walking toward a nearby homeless resource center when Sims pulled out a knife and "swung" it toward him.

Holland said he disarmed Sims, taking away the knife and hiding it in his pocket. Sims continued to be confrontational toward Holland and Holland noticed there was a small cut on his finger, he told police.

When asked how Sims got stabbed, Holland said, "When I saw myself bleed, [expletive] this is equal wounds. You stab me, it's okay for me to stab you," the report stated.

Holland told police there were previous altercations between himself and Sims "in the last four weeks." When asked why he didn't walk away once he got the knife, he said, "Because [Sims] still wanted to act tough, once I took the knife. [Expletive], I got the knife, let's fight," according to the report.

A witness told police he shot a video on his phone of the incident. The video showed Holland and Sims fighting before Holland appeared to walk away while Sims stayed at the corner of Foremaster and Main Street, the report stated.

Police said the video showed a black handle to a knife in Holland's pocket. Holland and Sims begin fighting again, and Holland takes the knife out of his pocket, appearing like he was going to stab Sims, according to the report.

Officers saw Sims "backpedaling" in the video while Holland yelled, "I stab your [expletive] right now," police documents said. Holland then swings the knife toward Sims, stabbing him, police said the video shows.

Later in the video, Holland tells witnesses "He came at me."

Surveillance video showed Holland walking to where Sims was lying and kicking him, according to the report.

A second witness told police Holland dropped the knife into a storm drain. Holland then grabbed a bottle of water and rinsed the blood from his hands while yelling, "Nobody saw anything," the report stated.

That witness also told police the two men were arguing about marijuana before the fight.

Holland was being held at the Clark County Detention Center without bail and faces a charge of open murder with the use of a deadly weapon. His next court appearance was scheduled for Dec. 28 at 8:30 a.m.

According to the arrest report, Las Vegas Metropolitan police took Harnden into custody at the Henderson Hospital on Dec. 13. During that arrest, police found she had two Rolex watches in her belongings. One, worth around $15K, had been reported stolen out of Seattle. Washington.

When the judge asked if she planned to seek bail in the theft case, Harnden replied "Because of my other charges, there's no reason to."

Harnden is also facing open murder and kidnapping charges in the death of Rodgers. According to her arrest report, Harnden filed a missing persons report the same day of the alleged killing (Dec. 6). Police said she provided false information in that report.

After learning from other witnesses that Rodgers was last seen with Harnden, investigators made numerous attempts to talk with her but she refused to return phone calls. The report said police also learned the two had fought, days before the disappearance because Rodgers told people that Sakari implicated her boyfriend in a California murder case. Investigators believe this is what likely led to Rodger's murder.

Police were able to locate Harnden in Henderson on Dec. 8 and she denied ever being in an argument with Rodgers. According to police documents, she said she and Rodgers had a planned prostitution date with Comanche, and following that date, Rodgers left in an Uber for another date and she had not been seen since. Police documents state there was no evidence to show an Uber was called or used by Rodgers in the early morning hours of Dec. 6

Police documents show Harnden attempted to mislead investigators. However, investigators uncovered text messages dating back to Dec. 1, that show Harnden and Comanche plotting the kidnapping and murder of Rodgers. The report said police also had cell phone tower evidence showing Harnden, Comanche, and Rodgers were together until 3:35 a.m. on Dec. 6 when Rodgers' phone appeared to be deactivated.

The most damaging evidence though came from Comanche's arrest report in which he described Harnden and his roles in kidnapping and killing Rodgers. He also provided police with a map of where her body could be found.

Comanche, who was arrested in California, is due to make an appearance in a Sacramento courtroom later Tuesday. He is expected to be extradited to Nevada.

Former NBA player allegedly plotted murder in Las Vegas valley during game, later confessed to police https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/former-nba-player-allegedly-plotted-murder-in-las-vegas-valley-during-game-later-confessed-to-police/ Tue, 19 Dec 2023 06:04:55 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1698890 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- While Chance Comanche was on the court for the NBA G-League Sacramento Stockton Kings on Dec. 2, he was plotting a murder, according to an arrest report obtained by the 8 News Now Investigators.

"Starting my game," Comanche messaged his alleged co-conspirator, according to Las Vegas Metro police. "I'll check half time."

"Okay have fun," Sakari Harnden replied. "Good luck."

Twelve days later, Comanche confessed to the murder, detectives said.

Comanche, 27, and Harnden, 19, face murder, conspiracy to commit murder and kidnapping charges in Las Vegas Justice Court.

The remains of their alleged victim, Marayna Rodgers, 23, were located in Henderson, just outside of Las Vegas, police said.

Rodgers had been a medical assistant in Washington state, according to loved ones. Her boyfriend told police they had traveled to Las Vegas on Dec. 1 with the intent of engaging in prostitution, the arrest report stated. Friends of Rodgers had also told detectives that Rodgers was a sex worker and it was unlike her to not check-in or return from "dates."

Marayna Rodgers, 23, was last seen on Dec. 6, according to loved ones. (KLAS)

A motive is also identified in the arrest report. Harden allegedly implicated a man identified as her boyfriend in a double murder in California, according to the report. The boyfriend was in custody for the murder in San Joaquin County jail, police said.

"Sakari was upset at Marayna for telling other people that Sakari had implicated her boyfriend in the murder," the arrest report stated.

Police said that they uncovered messages dating back to Dec. 1 on the communication application Telegram between Comanche and Harnden planning the kidnapping and murder of Rodgers.

"Pretend to be a trick and have her come to wherever you at and get her when she show up," Harnden messaged Comanche, according to police.

On Dec. 4, police said Comanche messaged, "Get that [expletive] drunk and mix rat poison or sum in her drink."

He later messaged, "I can snap her neck or just strangle the [expletive]," the report stated.

The friend said that he had dropped off Rodgers to meet Harnden and found it odd that a man, who police later identified as Comanche, was in the back seat.

In the early morning hours, while the pair was with Rodgers, police said Comanche messaged, "My acting skills are beyond superb."

Detectives said Comanche appeared to coach Harnden about being questioned by police.

"It's Vegas, she [expletive] around and got kidnapped.

Police said they obtained additional evidence such as surveillance video detailing Comanche's whereabouts as he visited and left the M Resort in Henderson, as well as video of Harnden leaving Comanche's hotel room visibly upset and crying after Comanche left with luggage on the morning of Dec. 6.

Earlier that morning, the pair was seen at Winco on Stephanie Street buying a cooking knife, lemons, limes, oranges and salt, according to the report.

Harnden was taken into custody in Las Vegas on Dec. 13. Police said she claimed Rodgers was getting into an Uber the last time she saw her. Through an emergency Uber request, police learned there were no rides matching Harnden's claim, the report stated.

Comanche was taken into custody in Sacramento County later that week. He said Harnden, a former girlfriend he stayed in touch with, described having issues with Rodgers, prompting the pair to put together a plan to lure her away from her friends to kill her, police said.

Comanche told police he offered a friend $3,000 to commit the murder, but he was not interested in helping, the report stated.

Comanche admitted to posing as a "trick," described meeting up with Rodgers and texting Harnden about the plan while Rodgers was in the car with them, according to detectives.

Comanche also described how the alleged murder was committed as they were parked in a cul-de-sac near Horizon Ridge Parkway and Gibson Road in Henderson. Comanche said he tried strangling Rodgers with a cord while Harnden tried choking her with her hands, according to the report.

Police said Comanche told them where to locate the remains of Rodgers.

On Dec. 15, Comanche's team announced he was released. He was placed in jail without bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. He is expected to be extradited to Nevada.

Harnden also faced a theft charge after police said she stole a Rolex. She was expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

While a motive remained unclear Monday, the 8 News Now Investigators have put together a timeline of events, as described by both police and loved ones of Rodgers:

December 5: Rodgers was out with friends but had already made plans to meet up with Harnden. Harnden had brought Comanche. Earlier that day, Comanche had played at The Dollar Loan Center in Henderson.

December 6: The last known time Rodgers was seen.

December 7: Rodgers was reported missing. Detectives suspected foul play and said they found evidence linking the pair to the disappearance of Rodgers.

December 13: Harnden was arrested for kidnapping in Las Vegas by the Criminal Apprehension Team. Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Diana Sullivan later set her bail at $500,000 with high-level electronic monitoring and ordered that prosecutors notify the Court if Rodgers was found alive.

December 18: Through an attorney, the family of Rodgers sent the 8 News Now Investigators the following statement:

"We held onto hope for Marayna's safe return, and are devastated that she will never come home. Marayna was kind and compassionate, with aspirations for her future.  We are grateful to the law enforcement agencies who have worked together over the last two weeks to seek answers and continue to seek justice for Marayna and our family.  We request privacy as we grieve this tragic and senseless loss."

It is unclear how long Comanche had been in Las Vegas. However, the Stockton Kings played the Rip City Remix in Portland, Oregon on Dec. 7.

Harnden also faces an unrelated theft charge. She is accused of stealing at least one Rolex.

Harnden declined a request for an interview with the 8 News Now Investigators.

In addition to playing in the G League, Comanche played briefly in the NBA. He played one game for the Portland Trail Blazers last season.

1 dead after argument led to stabbing in Downtown Las Vegas https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/1-dead-after-stabbing-in-downtown-las-vegas/ Tue, 19 Dec 2023 00:18:47 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1698736 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Las Vegas police said one person is dead Monday after a stabbing in Downtown Las Vegas.

Around 2:40 p.m. Metro police responded to the 1400 block of Main Street, near Owens Street after a report of a man who was stabbed.

When officers arrived, serval security personnel and citizens pointed to the suspect who was walking away from the scene, police said.

Officers took the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Keith Holland, into custody as he was walking southbound on Main Street.

Keith Holland, 37 (LVMPD)

The victim was found on the sidewalk suffering from several stab wounds. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

Police said that the victim and the suspect, both men in their 30s, had been in an ongoing argument for several days leading up to the stabbing.

On Monday the men were arguing on the sidewalk when it turned physical. The suspect then pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim, according to police.

The suspect then threw the knife into a storm drain and walked away.

Both the victim and the suspect appeared to be unhoused, police said.

Monday night Main Street was closed in both directions in the area as police conducted their investigation.

People who live nearby and members of the unhoused community were shocked to hear about the stabbing just down the street from where they gather.

"We're family out here," said a woman experiencing homelessness who didn't want to give her name. 'We're all out here trying to survive. I wish we had extra help, like extra sleep places."

David Murray lives nearby, and says it's typically safe in the daytime. He was also surprised the incident happened in broad daylight.

"I think we need to get these people housed, out of these streets. Otherwise, it is going to keep on happening," Murray said. "These people are around each other all day every day and tempers flare."

$300k in stolen goods recovered, Las Vegas police say https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/300k-in-stolen-goods-recovered-las-vegas-police-say/ Fri, 15 Dec 2023 17:53:41 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1696393 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Stolen goods recovered from an illegal fence operation in Las Vegas totaled over $300,000 in value, police said Friday.

According to a post on X from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the department's Organized Retail Theft Section shut down an illegal fence operation in Las Vegas.

According to the Office of Justice Programs, a "fence" is an operation that buys and sells stolen goods.

"All fences, as both buyers and sellers of stolen merchandise, must face two distinct markets: the theft offenders that supply them with goods, and the public purchasers that buy their wares," said an excerpt from a Security Journal article highlighted on the Office of Justice Programs website.

Law enforcement officials recovered more than $300,000 worth of stolen goods and products, LVMPD's post said.

Las Vegas teens accused in beating death of classmate claim self-defense https://www.8newsnow.com/crime/las-vegas-teens-accused-in-beating-death-of-classmate-claim-self-defense/ Thu, 14 Dec 2023 19:19:39 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1695438 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Four of the nine teens accused in the deadly beating of a classmate did not receive bail as expected during a court hearing Thursday morning. Initially, Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Nadia Woods planned to issue a bond for each defendant. The state was asking for a $250K bond for each defendant but the defense attorneys argued against that.

The four accused teens along with family members appear in Las Vegas Justice Court on Dec. 14, 2023. (KLAS)

Damien Hernandez, Gianni Robinson, Dontral Beaver, and Treavion Randolph face second-degree murder charges in the death of 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis who prosecutors said was attacked during a fight on Nov. 1, over some stolen items by a group of teens who deliberately stomped on Lewis's head. The Rancho High School student died from blunt force trauma to his head and body, the coroner said.

Friends and family gather for a prayer vigil remembering Jonathan Lewis. The 17-year-old was beaten to death near Rancho High School on Nov. 1, 2023. (KLAS)

Defense attorneys for the defendants argued a $250K bail was not fair because some of the defendants kicked or hit Lewis more or less times than other defendants and the bail amount should reflect that.

Damien Hernandez, 17; Gianni Robinson, 17; Dontral Beaver, 16; and Treavion Randolph, 16, all face murder charges in the death of Jonathan Lewis. (LVMPD)

The four teens are claiming self-defense because Lewis threw the first punch and a friend of Lewis's allegedly had a knife, according to defense attorneys. Although the prosecutor conceded Lewis threw the first punch, the prosecutor added the punch didn't warrant the violent attack that Lewis suffered. The prosecutor said six videos show the fight and will likely be used as evidence.

Judge Woods said she would issue a written order on bond next week for the defendants.

Although the four teens are in the adult court system, they are currently being held in the juvenile detention system for their safety. There are also five juveniles in the case that are awaiting adult certification. A 10th "person of interest" remains at large.

Lewis's mother was in the courtroom and cried throughout the entire hearing.
